Amsterdam

A bicycle city ringed by fan-shaped canals. Trams spread out from Centraal station across town.

Your own contactless card or phone is the ticket: OVpay, one system nationwide. Tap it on the gate or the reader in the vehicle, both boarding and leaving, no registration. The anonymous transit card is no longer sold, so a bank card is the visitor's default. Cash is useless on trams and buses, and even the tram conductor sells paper tickets by card only. Miss the tap-out and you are charged an amount unrelated to your ride, so present one card, never a whole wallet. The exception: GVB's ferries across the IJ are free - nothing to tap.
